The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Air Quality Division (AQD), is proposing to act on Permit to Install (PTI) application Nos. APP-2022-0290 from EES Coke Battery, LLC (EES Coke), APP-2023-0033 for Dearborn Industrial Generation (DIG), APP-2023-0066 for United States Steel Corporation – Great Lakes Works (US Steel). The purpose of these actions is to add the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission limits from the USEPA Federal Implementation Plan (FIP or Federal Plan) into the appropriate air permits. These actions are to address federal Clean Air Act (CAA) requirements to bring the SO2 nonattainment portion of Wayne County back into attainment.
EGLE is holding a public comment period on the proposed air permits until August 28, 2023. The attached letters have information about the proposed permits. More detailed information on the applications as well as ways to submit a comment about the companies request can be found at: Michigan.gov/EGLEAirPublicNotice and select “Open for Comment”.
Prior to acting on these applications, the AQD is holding a public comment period and a virtual public hearing, if requested in writing, to allow all interested parties the opportunity to comment on the proposed permits. All relevant information received during the comment period and hearing if held, will be considered by the decision maker prior to taking final action on the applications.
