Roadmap to Apartheid (2012) is the fourth film in the Voices of Palestine Film Series. In this 90-minute documentary, the directors take a detailed look at the apartheid analogy commonly used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ana Nogueira is a white South African and Eron Davidson a Jewish Israeli. Drawing on their first-hand knowledge of the issues, the producers take a close look at the apartheid comparison often used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their film breaks down the rhetorical analogy into a fact-based comparison, noting where the analogy is useful and appropriate, and where it is not. There are many lessons to draw from the South African experience relevant to conflicts all over the world. This film is as much a historical document of the rise and fall of apartheid, as it is a film about why many Palestinians feel they are living in an apartheid system today, and why an increasing number of people around the world agree with them.

The screening will be followed by brief comments from discussants, Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly (African American Studies), mark wenzel (Philosophy), and Haneen Hamideh (Wayne Law Students for Justice in Palestine), as well as dialogue with the audience.

This event is free and open to the public. The film series continues to be a source of connection, education, and solidarity building. The conversation and action that these films and discussions generate are crucial. Help us spread the word!

Did you know that 38 states across the country, including Michigan, have laws aimed at restricting and chilling support for Palestinian dignity and rights? Over the last year, we’ve seen an unprecedented rise in repression and criminalization of pro-Palestine activists. Thousands of college students and faculty have been arrested and many employees have been disciplined or fired for speaking up against genocide.

Palestine Legal is the only free legal services organization in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to supporting the movement for Palestinian rights, including defending free speech and our ability to boycott.

This year they received over 2,900 requests for legal support―more than 10 times what they received in the previous year. Thanks to their work, the federal government has launched investigations into five universities for anti-Palestinian racism, judges have reinstated student groups and campus actions, prosecutors have dropped charges against protesters, and universities have dismissed complaints against pro-Palestine staff.

The funds raised at this event will go toward Palestine Legal’s ongoing efforts to support our ceasefire movement and our demands for Palestinian liberation.

Founded in 2012, Palestine Legal is an independent organization dedicated to protecting the civil and constitutional rights of people in the U.S. who speak out for Palestinian freedom. Palestine Legal is confronting the growing suppression of Palestine advocacy by representing, advising, and providing legal education to activists and communities who stand up for justice in Palestine.
