The ICCROM-Sharjah Regional Center (the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) has announced the shortlist for the 4th edition of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in Cultural Heritage Conservation in the Arab Region (2023-2024). The shortlist includes 18 outstanding projects from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. The jury selected the project by the Tiro Association for Arts in Lebanon for its efforts to preserve cinematic cultural heritage by rehabilitating historic cinemas, protecting and conserving posters, films, oral traditions, and traditional crafts through workshops and festivals. The winners of the fourth edition of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices (2023-2024) will be announced during a special ceremony in Sharjah at the end of November this year.
Actor and director Kassem Istanbouli, founder of the Lebanese National Theater, emphasized “the importance of being included in the shortlist for the ICCROM-Sharjah Award, which is one of the most significant awards highlighting the preservation and protection of cultural heritage in the Arab region. This is thanks to the initiative of its founder, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, who consistently works to preserve Arab identity, heritage, and culture.”
The Tiro Association for Arts, led by a team of young volunteers, aims to establish free and independent cultural spaces in Lebanon. This mission includes the rehabilitation of Cinema El Hamra and Cinema Stars in Nabatiyeh, Cinema Rivoli in Tyre—transformed into the Lebanese National Theater as the first free theater and cinema in Lebanon—Cinema Empire in Tripoli, now the Lebanese National Theater in Tripoli, and the historic Coliseum Cinema in Beirut. The association organizes workshops and artistic training programs for children and youth, reopens and restores cultural spaces, and hosts festivals, events, and artistic exhibitions. It also focuses on preserving cinematic posters and archives, curating artistic and educational film screenings for children and youth, and building exchange networks with international festivals. These efforts provide young filmmakers opportunities to showcase their work and introduce audiences to the history of cinema and both local and international productions.
The association also places a strong emphasis on inclusivity by offering film screenings for the visually impaired and deaf and organizing training workshops for individuals with special needs. Among the festivals founded by the association are the Lebanon International Theater Festival, the Watch Lebanon in Mobile Cinema, the Tripoli International Theater Festival, the Tyre International Music Festival, the Lebanese International Theater Festival for Storytelling, the Tyre International Fine Arts Festival, the Tyre Cultural Days Festival, the Lebanese International Theater Festival for Women’s Monodrama, the Lebanese International Theater Festival of Contemporary Dance, the Tiro International Arts Festival, and the Tyre International Theater Festival.
