Northville Faces New Legal Push to Ban Outdoor Street Dining

Fresh off a courtroom win that reopened Main and Center Streets to vehicle traffic, the group “Let’s Open Northville” is back in court — this time aiming to eliminate all outdoor dining set up in parking spaces across downtown.

In a new legal filing, the group argues that sidewalk dining violates the spirit of a judge’s earlier ruling, which focused on reopening streets to cars. However, Northville officials strongly dispute this claim, asserting that outdoor dining has long been a part of the downtown fabric and remains in compliance with local ordinances.

“Street dining is not just a feature — it’s essential for small business survival and the life of our downtown,” one city official noted.

The city is now exploring legal avenues to appeal the motion and protect its outdoor dining spaces, which have become especially popular since the pandemic.
