Urban League Declares ‘State of Emergency’ for Black Americans Under Trump’s Second Term

In a powerful and urgent declaration, the National Urban League has officially announced a “state of emergency” for Black Americans, citing a coordinated dismantling of civil rights protections and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives under the second Trump administration.

Speaking with NPR’s Consider This, Urban League President Marc Morial warned that the aggressive rollback of DEI policies is “threatening to erase decades of civil rights progress.” He described the current political climate as a hostile reversal of racial justice efforts, echoing deep concern within civil rights communities nationwide.

The announcement comes just six months into Trump’s return to office, as federal agencies have targeted what the administration labels “woke” policies — eliminating DEI offices, slashing racial equity programs, and discouraging corporate diversity efforts.

“This is not just policy. It’s a cultural and moral regression,” Morial said.

The National Urban League, one of the country’s oldest civil rights organizations, is calling for immediate mobilization, renewed advocacy, and national vigilance.
