Congratulations! You’ve been invited to join our next broadcast. Follow this guide and you’ll be setting yourself up to win.

A. Before the broadcast:

Make sure you have the following:

  • A laptop or desktop with a webcam and mic.
  • A recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  • A strong internet connection. If possible, connect to your router with an ethernet cable instead of using WiFi.
  • We recommend wearing earbuds or headphones to prevent audio echoes.
  • If you don’t have a laptop or desktop, then you can join on your phone. But the experience is usually best on a laptop/desktop. On Android, we recommend the Chrome browser. On iOS, you must use Safari.

B. Joining the broadcast:

When the time comes, follow these steps to enter the broadcast studio:

  • The host should provide you with a link before the show. Click the link and you’ll be taken to their broadcast studio.
  • Allow StreamYard to access your camera and mic.
  • Make sure you have the correct camera and mic selected.
  • You can use green screen effects by clicking on Cam/Audio settings.
  • Enter a display name. Use your actual name or the name of your brand. Then enter the studio.
  • The host will be informed that you’ve arrived. You won’t be part of the broadcast until the host decides to add you in. The page will update to let you know when you’ve been added. Then everyone will be able to see and hear you.
  • Remember, the host asked you to join because they want to hear what you have to say. Have fun!
  • You can chat privately with the host within the platform, and you can also see the public comments displayed on your screen.

C. Screen Sharing

Screen sharing is an awesome way to present a slideshow or show a video. Both you and your guests can share a screen. You can share images, videos, PDFs, and more.

Screen sharing works best when you have two monitors – two monitors make it easy to click from slide to slide while you’re still controlling the live stream on the other monitor.

How to Screen Share

  1. In the broadcast studio, there’s a toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Click the “Share Screen” button. Your guests have this option as well. Screen Share Button
  2. The screen sharing tips will pop up on screen. Click the blue “Share Screen” button.
  3. Another popup will appear with three options:
    • Your Entire Screen: Shares your entire desktop screen
    • Application Window: Lets you choose one application at a time; great for sharing a powerpoint or keynote.
    • Chrome Tab: Lets you share ANY file from your computer in a Chrome Tab. Open a new tab, drag the file into Chrome from your computer desktop or folder. Your cursor displays a little ‘+’ sign if the action is successful. This is the best way to share audio Screen Share Selection

    NOTE: To share audio from your screen you MUST click the “Share Audio” button.

  4. Then click Share, and your screen will be added to your show. Use the layout buttons under the screen to change how the screen appears alongside you and your guests. Click the tile that lights up blue to REMOVE the screen share.

D. Using Green Screen (optional)

Getting started

Have a green screen or blue screen? You can replace it with a virtual background! In your StreamYard studio, click the “Cam/Mic” settings button and open the “Green screen” tab. Don’t have a green screen? You can pick one up on Amazon.

Tips

Here’s some tips to ensure the best possible experience:

  • Lighting is essential. Make sure your backdrop is uniformly lit. You want it to be a similar shade of green in all places. Using multiple light sources can help. Try to eliminate folds and shadows. Investing in a decent green screen will make a big difference. Green screens usually work better than blue.
  • Don’t wear clothes that are the same color as your backdrop. The more contrast the better.
  • Use a powerful computer. The green screen feature uses your graphics processor (GPU). It can run on almost all devices, but it works best on powerful devices.

Configure your browser

If the green screen feature isn’t working for you, you may need to change your browser settings.

You’ll need a graphics processor (GPU) to use the green screen feature. Most, but not all, devices have some kind of GPU. But even if you have a GPU, your browser settings may prevent StreamYard from accessing it. If you have a GPU, but the green screen feature isn’t working, try following the steps below.

Google Chrome

  1. Open your Chrome settings by clicking the 3 dots in the top right corner.

  2. Scroll to the bottom, then click “Advanced”.

  3. Ensure hardware acceleration is on. If this was off, then turning it on may be all you need. Try it again on StreamYard. If it works, you can stop here.

  4. Open a new Chrome tab. Type “chrome://flags” in the address bar and hit enter.
  5. Enable the “Override software rendering list” option. It’s usually near the top of the list.

  6. Try it again on StreamYard. If it’s still not working, but you’re sure you have a GPU, then there may be other browser settings you need to change. Contact us if you need help.

Other browsers

The green screen feature only works on Chrome right now. We’ll update this page if support for other browsers is added.

Please remember:

  1. Have the light in front of you not behind you

  2. Leave not more than 10% headspace (the area of the screen that is above your head)
