We are in this together is a non-scripted, live, non-profit, broadcast by Dearborn Blog, hosted by Wissam Charafeddine, to have conversations, that become oral history records, of our lives during the COVID19 pandemic also known as coronavirus Pandemic. These are personal stories of our lives during these unprecedented social isolation measures, in a globalized world.
Sami Abdallah is the president of Freethought Lebanon and a diligent Lebanese civil society activist. A theoretical physicist by profession, Sami is passionate about both pursuing scientific truth and defending basic human rights in Lebanon and the Middle East. His upbringing in a conservative community in Beirut, as well as his first-hand experience in the hardships of religious indoctrination as a young student, propelled him to rebel against the status quo, endeavour to empower and protect freethinkers in Lebanon and around the world, and fight against religious misogyny. Sami’s work focuses on fostering the Lebanese freethinking community, standing up to intolerance, promoting secularism, and countering the narratives and power structures that give rise to religious fundamentalism and sectarian violence. He also manages a community of freethinkers in Lebanon where debates and critical thinking are nurtured to combat both biased rhetoric and neo-political correctness that is increasingly being used as a tool for coercion and censorship. Sami has worked extensively to fight against discrimination and the negative social stereotypes that vilify atheists in Lebanon and the Arab World, and has been closely involved in offering protection, guidance, and support to those who have been persecuted and threatened because of their atheism or skepticism.
