Antonio Cosme is an indigenous (Coahuiltecan and Boricua) writer, public speaker, entrepreneur, radical economist, educator, artist, beekeeper and farmer from Southwest, Detroit. Much of his work has been dedicated to lecturing, writing, and acting in opposition to the neoliberal assault on Detroit and water. His media, interviews, viral street art, blogs, and articles have been featured in movies, magazines, newspapers. In 2015 Antonio was arrested for paining #freethewater on a water tower in the midst of the flint water crisis and Detroit shutoff crisis. Beyond just resisting the abuse of public goods, he founded Southwest Grows urban farm on land taken from Detroit residents by banks. The space seeks to use agroecological and permaculture principles to reshape the broader urban ecology, connecting social movements with struggles for land reclamation and environmental justice.
He also co-founded Black to the Land, a coalition org of black families that organizes camping and hiking trips! Currently he works with the National Wildlife Federation introducing Detroit High School to outdoor experiences; hiking, hunting and foraging across the state and region. He and three other beekeepers founded the Southwest Beetroit cooperative in 2016. Antonio works with Anishinaabe communities across the great lakes, locally in Waywiiyaatanong having organized with the Detroit Indigenous community to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. With local anishinaabe Antonio helped initiate the #Detroitsugarbush producing maple sugar and syrup from Detroit trees. People can find more information about his creative work by searching #decolonizedetroit and his farm work #swgrows and his bee work at #swbeetroit.
