The Arab Spring (Arabic: الربيع العربي) was a series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across much of the Arab world in the early 2010s. It began in response to corruption and economic stagnation and was influenced by the Tunisian Revolution. After 11 years, the lives of people in Arab Spring countries have improved in certain aspects but worsened in others.

Knocking down or defacing statues of national founders or heroes not only displays ignorance of history but also assaults the principles of Western civilization that allow for racial progress to continue." Henry Olsen "I think a statue ...

GenEd: The Roads Not Taken
For the most part, educational common sense in our Dearborn community dictates the following: if you want to be successful in this world, become a doctor. Doctors make money, retain job security, and hold a title of prestige within the community. If you can’t become a doctor, then a lawyer or pharmacist will suffice. We’ll ...
From Decided, to Undecided, to Voting for Abdul El-Sayed
Politics is difficult for me to navigate, because I don’t like being beholden to a political template, political rhetoric, and I like to believe that human beings are multidimensional in that they do not fit nicely into categories. It’s ironic, because I am a psychiatrist, and we diagnose patients based on diagnostic criteria and categories. ...
GenEd: All Testing Left Behind
Testing, not kids, is what's failing across America.
A Woman’s Right to Move
When I was in eighth grade my teacher had us write down our goals for high school. My number one goal was to get accepted to the University of Michigan. I was unsure why I wanted to attend the institution so bad. Nobody in my immediate family had attended and I actually knew very little ...
Parenting Through Separation and Divorce
Divorce is a short-term crisis and a long-term process of understanding and healing for families. Statewide, Michigan had 29,708 divorces in 2014, a rate of 6 divorces per 1,000 residents, which is 14 percent lower than the number of divorces in 2004. There were 1.92 marriages for every divorce in 2014, the highest ratio since ...
What’s in A Sign?
One of the things I often find myself paying attention to, whether I am here in Dearborn or visiting a new place, is the attention to detail that businesses put into signage and the design of storefronts or window displays.
A Yemeni-American Experience
If you were to enter my neighborhood, you might be either shocked or feel very at home, Here are some things you would notice....
The Ugly Cousin Scoop: “Dear Dearborn Heights…”
They say sarcasm is anger’s ugly cousin. And cheating’s ugly cousin is flirting, or so I’ve heard. Well, Dearborn has an ugly cousin too. About as ugly as a festering boil on the red side of a baboon’s ass. Well, maybe not THAT ugly. But certainly that inflamed. Fellow outsiders, I introduce to you: the ...
The Gas Station War Zone
I have read before that the Gas Station Attendant job is one of the most dangerous in America. Why do Arabs in Michigan insist on dominating this dirty business? Are their lives cheap enough to be worth $9/hour + 50% chance of death? And why can't Gas Station attendants form a Union to defend their ...
The LA-AH Scoop: The Many Ways To Say “No” In Dearborn
No means no! We all know that. But “yes” can also mean no. So can “maybe”. So can “inshallah”. So can “of course! I’ll be there!” Outsiders, I’m sure you’re confused. But Dearborners know exactly what I’m talking about. In a word, there are so many ways to say “no” in Dearborn that we’ve forgotten ...
The Death Camp Scoop: Confessions Of An Arabic School Survivor
Previously, I touched upon the horrific institution of Arabic School as a last resort for parents who want to discipline their kids. Of course, that is an exaggeration. Arabic School is not meant to punish kids. It’s meant to serve a number of far greater purposes, such as language education, cultural awareness, and religious foundation. ...
The Slipper Scoop: Whoopin’ Dearborn Style!
Let’s face it, folks. There’s nothing like a good beating to really counter a child’s misbehavior. Yes, we know that it’s the 21st century now and ‘hugs not drugs’ and all that crap… but dissenters of this argument better have a really good explanation for why kids today are so outrageously arrogant, self-centered, and disrespectful. ...
The Hour Scoop: A Breakdown Of Dearborn’s ‘Arabic Time’
“Er-a-beek time. ER-A-BEEK time! ER-A-BEEK ER-A-BEEK ER-A-BEEK Time!” Dearborners of the 90’s will recall this funny little tune from the evening lineup of the Arabic television station “Sada El Arab”, which was, until the advent of Internet and satellite TV, Dearborn’s only link to the Arab world. But Arabic Time isn’t just a childhood memory; ...
Quasimodo… you have nothing to worry about!…..
Years ago, on a cold snowy winter day, I recall randomly walking into a remote café, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, punch drunken by overwhelm and struck by emotion. I saw her, and she was beautiful. I made one mistake though ... I did not pay attention to where I was. Unlike James Blunt ...
The Winter Scoop: Four Ways to Enjoy the Snow in Metro Detroit
This one’s a bit late in the season, I admit. But in Michigan, you NEVER know when frigid February will strike again! It may not be Aspen or the Alps, but Dearborn does have its fair share of winter entertainment. When frost hits, consider any of these wintry pastimes. 4. Hemlock Park: East Dearborn Hemlock ...
Why Lebanese Love Their Raw Kibbeh And Where To Try It in Dearborn, Michigan
MAUREEN ABOOD wrote in NPR: Growing up, I never knew I was eating raw meat. Or maybe it was just that I didn't think "raw" was something worth noting. I simply knew that kibbeh nayeh was incredibly good. And so I was stunned by a recent spate of salmonella cases here in Michigan – home ...
The Traffic Scoop: Five Dearborn Traffic Areas to Avoid
Dearborners know that if your destination is through these parts, take an alternate route! 5. Ford Road and Oakman Boulevard: Prepare for outrageously long traffic lights, heavy car flow, and never-ending turn signals. Take Oakman to Miller or to Michigan Ave. instead. 4. Michigan Avenue (Between Oakman and Schlaff): It’s the traffic light alley of ...
